Why a Sustainable Button-Up Shirt Became the Foundation of IRMA

The Origin of IRMA

I can’t say exactly when the idea for IRMA was born. But I always knew what I wanted in my collection. Not just as a founder but as a woman.

The answer was simple: a button-up shirt.

A well-made button-up moves with you from morning to night without needing an outfit change. A t-shirt gives you comfort but a button-up gives you something more. Refined yet relaxed. Structured yet versatile. The easiest way to feel put together without overcomplicating anything.

But for me it couldn’t be just any shirt. It had to reflect my values. Designed thoughtfully, produced responsibly, made to last. That’s how IRMA began.

Sustainability at the Core

The story of every IRMA shirt starts in Paris.

Our fabric is deadstock cotton poplin sourced through Nona Source, a platform that redistributes high-end surplus materials from luxury fashion houses including Louis Vuitton Maisons ateliers. Fabric that would otherwise go to waste is given a second life in our small-batch collection.

From Paris, the fabric travels to a specialist Polish manufacturer with decades of expertise in shirt-making craftsmanship. Every shirt is cut and sewn with care, not speed.

This is what sustainable women’s clothing looks like in practice. Not a marketing claim. A supply chain you can actually trace.

Small-Batch Production and Slow Fashion

We produce in small, limited batches only.

In an industry where mass production creates surplus stock that ends up discarded, we take the opposite approach. A few shirts at a time. Every piece made with purpose. Nothing wasted.

This is slow fashion in the truest sense. Not a trend. A commitment.

Beyond the Fabric

Sustainability at IRMA doesn’t stop at what the shirt is made from.

Our packaging is plastic-free and reusable. Our production partners share our commitment to ethical labour practices. Every choice, from fabric to delivery, is made with the same intention.

Because sustainable fashion isn’t just about what you wear. It’s about how everything around it is handled.

A Forever Piece

A button-up shirt transcends seasons and trends.

It’s not just an item of clothing. It’s an investment in style, longevity, and conscious dressing. The best sustainable wardrobe piece is the one you reach for year after year without thinking twice.

Launching IRMA with a timeless, responsibly made button-up was the most natural choice. It embodies everything I believe in: effortless elegance, quality over quantity, and a quieter approach to fashion.

How to Wear Your IRMA Shirt

One of the greatest things about a well-made button-up is how many ways it works.

Wear it open
Throwing a shirt open over a knit, a tank, or another layer instantly adds depth and character to an outfit. It’s the easiest way to look intentional without trying. Layering says something about personal style — it reflects confidence and individuality in a way that feels natural.

Wear it with black

A black button-up shirt is one of the most versatile pieces in a conscious wardrobe. Pair it with tailored trousers or straight denim for daytime. Add a bold earring or layered necklace for evening. Wear it open over a dress or under a coat for transitional weather.
Monochrome works beautifully here too — black shirt with black wide-leg trousers is one of the most effortlessly elegant combinations there is.

However you wear it, the IRMA shirt adapts. That’s the whole point.
